Caliza Restaurant is a gorgeous thing. Located in Alys Beach, Caliza is tucked away in a building that resembles a fortress. The fine dining restaurant is open to the public for dinner and closed during the day to act as an Alys Beach owners only pool/lounge/lunch area. The atmosphere is very south beach luxe and they’ve got some great food to pair with it ($29-44 entrees). The restaurant is entirely outside, so make sure to wear breathable clothing during the hot summer days. The restaurant is very small, so make reservations. Come early, grab a cocktail and enjoy it on the rooftop terrace before you dine.
Above are the Fried Green Tomatoes ( Honey-Tabasco Bacon, Jumbo Crab Meat, Boston Bibb, Arugula, Vidalia Ranch, $15), a crowd favorite; Ahi Tuna (jicama, green apple, jalapeno slaw, tempura avocado, chili oil, soy caramel sauce), fresh, delicious and a bit spicy; Duck (wild rice, gingerbread waffle, peach butter, parsnip puree); and Halibut (calamari “snow,” sea beans, squid ink pearl pasta risotto), a colorful and balanced dish. Chef de Cuisine, Kevin Korman, loves to innovate with different flavors and combinations- a rare find at the beach, where old stand-by menus infrequently change.
Above are the: Lamb Loin (Mushroom Crust, Black Trumpet Mushrooms, Asparagus, Herb Spaetzle, Truffle Lamb Jus, $38), perfectly sous vide and seared; Black Grouper (Crabmeat Crust, Slow Roasted Tomato Risotto, Haricot Verts, $35) and the Strawberry “Shortcake” dessert (Almond Short Bread, Strawberry Ice Cream, Compressed Strawberries, Vanilla Crème Fraiche), $9). Their desserts are often deconstructed, fun and experimental so don’t expect anything boring here. Also, make sure to check out the daily happy hour from 5:30-6:30pm- offering discounted appetizers and drinks!
